Crease, historian for the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory and Chair of the Philosophy Department at Stony Brook University, will give two talks on the Laboratory's history in Brookhaven Lab's Berkner Hall at 4 p.m. on October 31 and December 12. Open to the public free of charge, the talks will be held to celebrate the Laboratory's 60th anniversary.
Breaking the Barrier Toward Nanometer X-ray ResolutionFri, 28 Sep 2007 02:34:00 EST A team of researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory have overcome a major obstacle for using refractive lenses to focus x-rays. This method will allow the efficient focusing of x-rays down to extremely small spots and is an important breakthrough in the development of a new, world-leading light source facility that promises advances in nanoscience, energy, biology, and materials research.
Brookhaven Lab Physicist Ilan Ben-Zvi Wins Free Electron Laser PrizeThu, 27 Sep 2007 08:00:00 EST Brookhaven physicist Ilan Ben-Zvi has won the 2007 Free Electron Laser (FEL) Prize along with James Rosenzweig of the University of California-Los Angeles. Sponsored by the International Free Electron Laser Conference, the prize consists of an award citation, a plaque, and approximately $2,500 for each recipient.
Symposium Celebrates 60 Years of Discovery at Brookhaven LabMon, 24 Sep 2007 08:30:00 EST As part its 60th anniversary celebration, the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory is hosting a full-day symposium for employees, guests, the media, and others interested in hearing renowned scientists speak about past and current developments in fields in which Brookhaven Lab has been and continues to be a pioneer.
Concert Featuring Buddy Merriam and Guest Dee Harris at Brookhaven Lab, October 20Thu, 20 Sep 2007 10:45:00 EST A Grand Ole Opry concert featuring Buddy Merriam and the Back Roads, with special guest Dee Harris, is scheduled on Saturday, October 20, at 8 p.m. at Brookhaven Lab in the Berkner Hall auditorium. Sponsored by the BNL Music Club, the event is open to the public.
New DNA-Based Technique For Assembly of Nano- and Micro-sized ParticlesWed, 12 Sep 2007 11:56:00 EST Scientists at Brookhaven National Lab have developed a new method for controlling the self-assembly of nanometer and micrometer-sized particles. The method, based on designed DNA shells that coat a particle's surface, can be used to manipulate the structure - and therefore the properties and potential uses - of numerous materials that may be of interest to industry.
DOE's Office of Science Launches Website for U.S. Role at Large Hadron ColliderWed, 12 Sep 2007 02:57:00 EST The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science today launched a new website to tell the story of the U.S. role in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a particle accelerator that will begin operating in Europe, near Geneva, Switzerland, next year. Hundreds of physicists, engineers and students from the United States are joining with colleagues from around the globe in the largest and most complex scientific experiments ever built.
Astronomer Steven Squyres to Speak at Brookhaven Lab on 'Science Results from the Mars Exploration Rover Mission,' October 5Tue, 11 Sep 2007 08:30:00 EST Steven Squyres, a scientist with the Mars Exploration Rover Mission, will speak on "Science Results from the Mars Exploration Rover Mission" at Brookhaven Lab on Friday, October 5, at 4 p.m. in Berkner Hall. NASA launched two Mars Exploration Rovers, on June 10 and July 7, 2003, primarily to probe the history of water on the red planet. After landing on Mars in January 2004, the robots began to explore the planet.
Tiny Tubes and Rods Show Promise as Catalysts, SunscreenMon, 10 Sep 2007 08:30:00 EST Brookhaven scientists have developed new ways to make or modify nanorods and nanotubes of titanium oxide, a material used in a variety of industrial and medical applications. The methods and new titanium oxide materials may lead to improved catalysts for hydrogen production, more efficient solar cells, and more protective sunscreens.
Thomas Ludlam Named Chair of Brookhaven Lab's Physics DepartmentFri, 31 Aug 2007 07:30:00 EST Thomas Ludlam has been named Chair of the Physics Department at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, effective September 1. He succeeds Sally Dawson, who had served in the position for two years.
Steven Vigdor Named Brookhaven Lab's Associate Laboratory Director for Nuclear and Particle PhysicsThu, 30 Aug 2007 06:30:00 EST Steven Vigdor, a physics professor at Indiana University, has been named the Associate Laboratory Director for Nuclear and Particle Physics at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, effective September 1.
