Duties:   I teach non-graded courses and seminars in genealogy, genetic genealogy, history, and film at OLLI's HSU campus. Skills include those required to present educational material to a classroom of students: the preparation of a syllabus and the creation of slides, outlines, summaries, etc. OLLI's director, for whom I work, is Sheila Rocker Heppe, 707-826-3743.
 
Job Title:  Electronic Voting Specialist
Employer:  Santa Cruz County Elections Office
Length:  Intermittent, 15 months
Duties:   Helped train precinct workers on the setup and operation of electronic voting equipment, worked telephone hotline, and helped certify the voting results. Supervisor: Tricia Webber, 831-454-2409.
 
Job Title:  Customer Service / Domain Name Provisioner
Employer:  Cruzio, The Internet Store, Santa Cruz, CA
Length:  5 years 7 months
Duties:   Responsible for domain name transfers. During my first three months, I helped 200 customers transfer their domain names from a defunct provider. Responsibilities included sales, helping customers with account problems via phone, email and in person. Assisted and advised customers on billing, website, DNS and domain name registration issues. Created several tools in perl to track phone calls and to perform other tasks. Composed webpages for both internal and external use.
 
Job Title:  Technical Support Manager
Employer:  DSL.net, Santa Cruz, CA
Length:  1 year
Duties:   Conducted interviews, hired, scheduled, supervised and evaluated a technical support staff of up to 7 people. Handled escalations. Established and enforced departmental policy. Acted as liaison to other department heads and helped coordinate interdepartmental tasks. Responsible for maintaining internal documentation. Worked directly with outside vendors and high-profile customers.
 
Job Title:  Technical Support Manager
Employer:  zNET, Santa Cruz, CA
Length:  5 years 1 month
Duties:   Responsible for several full- and part-time technical support engineers. Principal duties included hiring, training, scheduling and supervising the staff, establishing and enforcing department procedure and policy. Wrote and maintained zNET's technical support pages.
 
Job Title:  Website Publisher
Employer:  Genealogy Online, Santa Cruz, CA
Length:  6 years
Duties:   Built a network of Linux/Apache servers providing services to the world-wide genealogy community. (The site reached upwards of 3 million hits a week.) Tasked in HTML and CGI development; maintenance of system files, network integrity and security; installation and compilation of software and upgrades; writing utilities in C, awk, sed and shell scripting for Internet protocols such as POP, HTTP and SMTP. Sold to Rootsweb.
 
Job Title:  Owner and Publisher
Employer:  National Queries Forum, Santa Cruz, CA
Length:  4 years 6 months
Duties:   Ran a genealogy periodical published nine times a year. Responsibilities included page design, layout and paste-up; mailing list management ; database development; supervision of labeling and bulk mailings; marketing; worked directly with advertisers and commercial printers and became versed in all relevant postal regulations. Wrote a text reader and database interface in C for electronic distribution. Sold to American Genealogy Magazine.
 
Job Title:  Theater Manager
Employer:  Nickelodeon Theatres, Santa Cruz, CA
Length:  8 years 2 months
Duties:   Part-time assistant manager for 3½ years then assumed the responsibilities of manager. Duties included overseeing the daily operations of all screenings, the hiring and supervision of staff, concessions inventory control, balancing nightly receipts, making cash deposits and resolving any number of problems that might arise, be they employee-, customer- or equipment-related.
